From cadet to graduate: in conversation with James Morrison
James Morrison joined Birzulis as a cadet while completing his structural engineering degree, graduating into the team as a Graduate Structural Engineer in September 2025. Based in Sydney, he’s already worked across design and on-site delivery including on one of the firm’s larger hospitality projects. We asked him about the jump from campus to practice, and what he’s picked up along the way.
What surprised you most about working at Birzulis?
The level of responsibility I was given early on. I didn’t expect to be accountable for projects โ both in design and on site โ so soon. It’s been one of the best parts of the role.
What’s the biggest difference between studying engineering and actually doing it?
At university, everything is given to you. In practice, you have to think outside the box. The answers aren’t laid out in front of you โ you have to work for them.
What’s the most challenging project you’ve worked on so far?
Oxley Ridge Tavern in Cobbitty. The size of it was the main challenge. It taught me that it’s better to break a large job into parts rather than trying to tackle everything at once.
What’s the best advice you’ve received from a senior engineer here?
Always review your work. It’s easy to make a simple mistake, and simple mistakes can have real consequences. It sounds obvious, but it’s something that sticks with you.
How does Birzulis help you grow as an engineer?
They push you to work outside your comfort zone, which forces you to improve. They also host and attend seminars, so there are good opportunities to stay across new software and products.
What would you tell someone starting out in engineering?
Listen to the senior engineers around you and absorb as much as you can โ their experience is genuinely valuable. And keep working hard. Practising engineering on real projects is more interesting and rewarding than anything you do at university.
James Morrison is a Graduate Structural Engineer at Birzulis’ Sydney office.
